Activity picks up significantly in spring as temperatures rise and carpenter bees emerge to mate and establish new nesting galleries. The hovering and dive-bombing that homeowners notice is almost always male carpenter bees being territorial - they look alarming but don't actually have a stinger. It's the females doing the drilling that are worth paying attention to.

What carpenter bees actually do to your home

Carpenter bees drill near-perfect circular holes, roughly the diameter of your finger, into wood surfaces to create nesting galleries. The entry hole goes straight in for a short distance before turning to run with the grain of the wood, sometimes extending several inches or more - and existing galleries get reused and extended year after year.

On their own, a few galleries aren't a structural crisis. But left untreated over multiple seasons, the cumulative damage to fascia boards, eaves, and structural trim can become significant and expensive to repair. The other issue is woodpeckers - they're attracted to carpenter bee larvae inside the wood and will aggressively peck into the same boards to get at them, accelerating the damage considerably.

Carpenter bees are often mistaken for bumblebees since they're similar in size. The key difference is the carpenter bee's abdomen — it's smooth and shiny black, while a bumblebee's is fuzzy and yellow.

Female carpenter bees do have stingers but are docile and very unlikely to sting unless directly handled. How do I know if it's a carpenter bee or a bumblebee?
