Cockroach control in Western North Carolina

Serving Asheville, Brevard, Cashiers, Hendersonville, Waynesville & surrounding areas

Spotting a cockroach in your home is one of those things that's hard to ignore. And the truth is, if you're seeing one, there are usually more you aren't seeing.

Cockroaches are good at staying out of sight, which means by the time most homeowners notice them, the problem is already more established than it looks.

Pisgah Pest Control has been helping homeowners across Asheville, Brevard, Hendersonville, Waynesville, and Cashiers deal with cockroach problems for over 50 years. We know where they hide, how they get in, and what it takes to clear them out properly.

Spotted a cockroach in your home?

Why cockroaches are found in WNC homes

Cockroaches aren't just a city pest or a sign of an unclean home - they're opportunistic insects that will take advantage of food, moisture, and shelter wherever they find it. Western North Carolina's humidity, older housing stock, and mild winters create conditions where cockroaches can establish themselves in homes across the region.

They're most commonly found in kitchens, bathrooms, and utility areas, but once a population gets established, they'll spread to other parts of the home as well.

How cockroaches get inside your home

  • Gaps around pipes, drains, and utility lines entering the home
  • Cracks in the foundation or exterior walls
  • Through drains and sewer connections
  • In grocery bags, cardboard boxes, and secondhand appliances brought into the home
  • Via shared walls in attached or multi-unit properties

Which cockroaches are common in Western North Carolina?

Not all cockroaches behave the same way, and knowing which species you're dealing with helps determine the right treatment approach.

German cockroach

The most common indoor species across WNC. Small, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head. Almost exclusively found indoors and reproduces rapidly — a small problem can become a large one in a matter of weeks. Tends to concentrate in kitchens and bathrooms where warmth and moisture are consistent.

American cockroach

Larger and reddish-brown, often called a palmetto bug in the South. Prefers warm, damp environments like basements, crawl spaces, and utility rooms. Can come in through drains and sewer lines. While less prolific than the German cockroach indoors, they're more commonly found in the crawl spaces typical of WNC homes.

Oriental cockroach

Dark brown to black and slower moving than other species. Strongly associated with damp, cool areas like basements, crawl spaces, and drains. Sometimes called a water bug. Less common than the other two but present across the region.

Signs you might have a cockroach problem

Cockroaches are nocturnal and spend most of their time hidden, so visible sightings are actually one of the later signs of a problem rather than an early one. Other things to look out for include:

  • A musty, oily smell in kitchen cabinets, under appliances, or in enclosed spaces
  • Small, dark droppings that look like ground pepper near food storage or along baseboards
  • Egg cases (small, dark brown capsules) tucked into cracks or behind appliances
  • Smear marks along walls or surfaces in areas of high moisture
  • Shed skins left behind as cockroaches grow

If you're seeing cockroaches during the day, that's often a sign the population is large enough that they're being pushed out of their hiding spots - worth acting on quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Does seeing one cockroach mean I have an infestation?

Not necessarily, but it's worth taking seriously. Cockroaches are social insects that tend to stay hidden, so a single visible cockroach often points to a larger population nearby. It's better to have it looked at early rather than waiting to see if more appear.

Are cockroaches dangerous?

Cockroaches can contaminate food preparation surfaces and food storage with bacteria, and their shed skins and droppings are known to trigger asthma and allergy symptoms, particularly in children. They're not just a nuisance pest.

Why do I keep seeing cockroaches in my kitchen?

Kitchens offer everything cockroaches look for - warmth, moisture, and food. They're particularly drawn to areas around appliances, under sinks, and inside cabinets where conditions stay consistently warm and dark. German cockroaches especially tend to concentrate in kitchens.

Can I get rid of cockroaches with shop-bought products?

Consumer sprays can kill cockroaches on contact but don't address the population as a whole and can actually push them deeper into hiding, making the problem harder to treat. Professional bait-based treatment is significantly more effective at eliminating a colony rather than just the ones you can see.

How long does cockroach treatment take to work?

Bait-based treatment works over one to two weeks as cockroaches feed on it and carry it back to harborage areas. You should notice a clear reduction in activity within that time. Follow-up may be recommended depending on the size of the infestation.

Do cockroaches come up through drains in WNC homes?

American cockroaches in particular can enter homes through drains and sewer connections, and they're commonly found in the crawl spaces typical of older WNC homes. If you're seeing larger reddish-brown cockroaches near bathrooms or utility areas, this is a likely entry point worth addressing.

As usual, Eddie did a thorough and exceptional job of providing our regular service, and especially finding and correcting the various areas in our house where we had a persistent problem with mice. He explained the situation and his corrective actions very clearly, and, also as always, it was a pleasure to see and talk to him. We are both delighted with Eddie and with the prompt and efficient help we get from Pisgah Pest.

Brian is the true professional we can always depend on. He answers any questions and sees to whatever current concerns we may have. We are very appreciative to have him taking care of our pest control. Brian checked out my yellow jacket concern and determined that I had seen some scouting and not a resident at what is a chipmunk hole. He never made me feel like I'd wasted his time and asked that I not hesitate if -- as in the past -- I see the enemy (I'm highly reactive)... He's destroyed some serious nests in the past! While he was at my home, he also checked and removed mouse traps. I depend upon Brian's technical competence without reservation, and I am very grateful for the excellent service with which he delivers it.
