Ladybug & stinkbug control in Western North Carolina
Serving Asheville, Brevard, Cashiers, Hendersonville, Waynesville & Surrounding Areas
If you've lived in the mountains long enough, you know what fall brings. The leaves turn, the temperatures drop, and suddenly every sunny exterior wall of your home has ladybugs and stinkbugs crawling all over it.
It happens every year, and for some homes it's a minor annoyance. For others, the numbers are significant enough to make getting through the front door feel like running a gauntlet.
Pisgah Pest Control helps homeowners across Asheville, Brevard, Hendersonville, Waynesville, and Cashiers keep ladybugs and stinkbugs out of their homes each fall. We know exactly when they show up, how they get in, and what to do about it.
Dealing with an invasion?
Why WNC homes see so many ladybugs and stinkbugs
Both ladybugs and stinkbugs are overwintering pests, meaning they don't stay active through winter — they look for somewhere sheltered and warm to ride it out until spring. Your home, with its wall voids, attic spaces, and sun-warmed exterior surfaces, fits the bill perfectly.
Western North Carolina's mix of wooded surroundings and older housing stock makes it particularly susceptible. Properties near tree lines tend to see the heaviest activity, and homes with lots of south or west-facing sun exposure are especially attractive since the warmth draws these insects in on fall afternoons.
When to expect them
Activity typically starts in September and peaks through October as temperatures begin to drop overnight. Once inside wall voids and attic spaces they'll stay largely dormant through winter, but warm spells - and heated interiors - can bring them out again unexpectedly through the colder months. Come spring, they'll start trying to find their way back outside, which often means a second wave of sightings indoors.
Ladybugs vs stinkbugs - What's the difference?
They behave almost identically when it comes to overwintering, but they're different insects and worth knowing apart.
Asian lady beetles (commonly called ladybugs)
- Small, dome-shaped, typically orange to red with black spots
- Often confused with the native ladybug, but the Asian lady beetle is the one that invades homes in large numbers
- Can leave a yellowish staining liquid on surfaces when disturbed or crushed
- Tend to gather on light-coloured exterior walls and around window frames in sunny afternoon hours
- Can bite, though it's more of a pinch than a sting and rarely breaks the skin
Brown marmorated stinkbugs
- Shield-shaped body, mottled brown, roughly the size of a thumbnail
- Notorious for the unpleasant smell they release when disturbed or crushed — avoid vacuuming them with a standard vacuum for this reason
- Often found crawling on walls, windows, and ceilings indoors once they've made it inside
Numbers have increased significantly across WNC in recent years as the species has spread further into the region
How they get into your home
Both insects are remarkably good at finding their way into small openings. Common entry points include:
- Gaps around window frames and door frames
- Cracks in exterior siding or around utility penetrations
- Openings around eaves, soffits, and roof lines
- Gaps where pipes or cables enter the home
- Chimneys and attic vents without proper screening
Once a few get in and release aggregation pheromones, more tend to follow — which is why some homes see far larger numbers than neighbouring properties.
Frequently asked questions
Why do ladybugs and stinkbugs invade WNC homes every fall?
Both are overwintering pests that seek out sheltered, warm spots to survive the winter months. Your home's wall voids, attic spaces, and sun-warmed exterior surfaces are exactly what they're looking for. WNC's mountain climate, with its sharp fall temperature drops, tends to trigger mass movement toward buildings each year in September and October.
Are Asian lady beetles actually dangerous?
They're not dangerous in the way a stinging insect is, but they can leave a yellowish liquid on surfaces when disturbed that can stain soft furnishings, and some people experience mild skin irritation from contact. In very large numbers indoors they can also trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
Why does my house get so many more than my neighbour's?
A few factors make certain homes more attractive than others - south and west-facing sun exposure, light-coloured exterior walls, proximity to tree lines, and gaps in the building envelope all play a role. Once insects find a good overwintering spot they also release pheromones that draw more insects to the same location year after year.
Should I vacuum up ladybugs and stinkbugs?
For ladybugs, a standard vacuum works fine - just dispose of the bag promptly. For stinkbugs, avoid using a bagless vacuum since the smell can linger in the machine. Use a vacuum with a disposable bag, or collect them manually into a sealed plastic bag for disposal.
Is there a best time of year to treat for these pests?
Yes - early to mid-fall, before large numbers have made it inside, is significantly more effective than treating mid-winter. Getting treatment in place by September gives you the best chance of keeping numbers down through the season.
Do ladybugs and stinkbugs cause any damage to my home?
No structural damage - neither pest eats wood, wiring, or building materials. The main issues are the sheer number of insects, the staining ladybugs can leave on surfaces, and the smell stinkbugs produce when disturbed. Unpleasant rather than dangerous, but worth dealing with properly.
